Brit Heller Brit Heller

Ready to level up your solar career in 2026? There’s never been a better time to pursue your NABCEP PV Installation Professional (PVIP) Certification. If you don’t yet have all your required installation experience, NABCEP’s new Board Eligible Status program gives you a head start. Read on to learn more!

Why Get Your PVIP

NABCEP’s PVIP certification is the gold standard for solar PV professionals. It validates your competence across the full spectrum of solar work – from design and installation to commissioning, and operations and maintenance. This certification is widely recognized across the solar industry, helping distinguish you from non-certified competitors and giving you a competitive edge in bid processes.

Two Pathways to PVIP Certification

Traditional Pathway

The traditional route requires you to have everything lined up before taking the exam:

  • Safety Training: OSHA 10 for the Construction Industry (or regional equivalent)
  • Education: 58 hours of advanced PV training (all within 5 calendar years prior to application)
  • Experience: At least 6 Project Credits from installations where you’re in a decision-making role (completed within 2 calendar years prior to application)
    • Systems 1-999kW = 2 Project Credits
    • Systems 1 MW+ = 3 Project Credits

Once you’ve submitted proof of all these requirements and paid the $500 application and exam fees, you’re ready to schedule your exam.

NEW: Board Eligible Pathway

NABCEP’s Board Eligible Status program flips the script, allowing you to complete requirements in a more flexible order:

Step 1: Education and Examination

Step 2: Experience Requirements

  • Gain your required installation experience over the next 3 years
  • Submit a Conversion Application
  • Receive your full NABCEP PVIP certification

Key Benefits:

  • You have 1 year (or 4 attempts) to pass the exam after completing coursework
  • You get 3 years from passing the exam to complete experience requirements
  • No additional fees when converting from Board Eligible to Board Certified status
  • You can demonstrate your knowledge and commitment while building experience

This pathway is ideal if you’re newer to the industry or simply want to prove your technical knowledge before accumulating all the required project credits.

What’s on the PVIP Exam?

The exam is written by industry Subject Matter Experts and covers 4 primary content domains based on the PVIP Job Task Analysis:

  1. System Design
  2. Installation
  3. System Commissioning
  4. Operations & Maintenance

Exam Details:

  • 70 multiple choice questions (60 scored, 10 pilot questions)
  • 4 hours to complete
  • Access to the 2017 NEC and a calculator
  • Scaled score of 70 required to pass (0-99 scale)
  • Available at Meazure Learning test sites or via remote proctoring
  • Re-exam fee of $275 if needed

Maintaining Your Certification

Once you’ve earned your PVIP, you’ll need to renew every 3 years with 30 hours of continuing education:

  • 6 hours: NEC
  • 2 hours: Building and/or Fire Codes
  • 12 hours: PVIP JTA topics
  • 10 hours: Renewable Energy

You’ll also need to submit a letter verifying you’re still actively involved in the solar industry. The recertification fee is $390.

HeatSpring offers multiple options for earning CEU hours, including Sean White’s popular 30-Hour Advanced Energy Storage and Code Training + CEUs bundle.
