New Course Announcement: Interconnection of Utility-Scale Solar PV to Transmission

Brit Heller Brit Heller

It seems like every time news outlets report on new utility-scale solar projects coming online, the megawatt (MW) capacity keeps getting bigger. With an increasing number of high-capacity solar projects in development, many industry professionals are finding themselves in need of rapidly expanding their knowledge related to transmission interconnection. This surge in large-scale solar installations is driving a growing demand for expertise in navigating the complex process of connecting these substantial clean energy sources to the grid efficiently and effectively.

To help bridge the knowledge gap for solar professionals, HeatSpring instructor Tim Taylor has launched the Interconnection of Utility-Scale Solar PV to Transmission course. This course, along with its optional prerequisite Introduction to Electric Transmission, make up the Electric Transmission and Solar PV Interconnection Bundle, a comprehensive program designed to equip professionals with the knowledge needed to navigate the complex world of utility-scale solar PV interconnection to transmission systems.

Led by industry veteran Tim Taylor, this course taps into his over 30 years of experience in the electric utility industry. His expertise has attracted more than 3,200 enrollments in his HeatSpring courses, establishing him as a trusted educator in the field.

Here’s a quick excerpt from the course where Tim explains the course learning objectives as well as the course organization.

Interconnection of Utility-Scale Solar PV to Transmission Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the background and industry that is driving today’s changes in interconnection to transmission, including recent FERC orders
  • Become familiar with the primary stages in Transmission Providers’ interconnection procedures, from pre-application to signing of the Generator Interconnection Agreement
  • Know the types of technical studies that transmission providers perform during the interconnection process and the impact on an interconnection request
  • Become aware of the physical and electrical components of interconnection of solar PV to transmission, including the primary equipment and the monitoring, control, and protection required for interconnection

The course is structured into five comprehensive modules:

  1. Current State and Challenges
  2. Processes for Generator Interconnection to Transmission
  3. Technical Studies for Generator Interconnection to Transmission
  4. Interconnection Equipment and Architecture
  5. Interconnection Monitoring, Control, and Protection

If you’re working in utility-scale solar, don’t miss this opportunity to grow your knowledge and skills in the critical area of utility transmission. Enroll in the Electric Transmission and Solar PV Interconnection Bundle to get started immediately!
