Why Article 130 on Energy Management Systems Just Moved to the Front of the NEC

Not every significant change in the 2026 NEC is about new requirements or revised language. Sometimes the signal is in where an article ends up in the code book. 

Article 750 on energy management systems spent years tucked toward the back of the NEC in chapter seven. For the 2026 revision, the Correlating Committee, the group responsible for decisions about where articles are placed and how they’re named, moved it to chapter one and renumbered it as Article 130. Chapter one is the general chapter, and there aren’t many articles in it. That’s exactly the point.

HeatSpring instructor Rebekah Hren notes that the move is a signal worth paying attention to. The Correlating Committee doesn’t reorganize articles arbitrarily. Placing energy management systems, which also covers power control systems, at the front of the code book is a statement about where the industry is headed and how central these systems are becoming to electrotech work.

Brit: Your new course covers Article 130 on energy management systems. Can you tell us a little about that article?

Rebekah: I think it’s super interesting. Article 130 used to be Article 750. It was in chapter seven, way in the back of the book. There’s a group called the Correlating Committee that makes decisions about where articles exist, what they’re named, and whether new articles are needed. That’s separate from our code-making panel. For the 2026 code, they made the decision to move Article 750 up into chapter one, which is the general chapter.

I think that should make us all sit up and pay attention, because they didn’t do that randomly. What they were saying is: this is a really important article. It’s going to be really important going forward. There’s a lot of new things happening in the electrotech industry that are covered here.

Energy management systems also covers power control systems. The fact that it’s now at the front of the code book matters. There aren’t very many articles in chapter one. That placement is a signal that this is something we should all be aware of and watching closely going forward.
