New Course: Owning the Customer Interconnection Experience Brit Heller Many people get introduced to interconnection the same way: someone hands them a stack of utility paperwork and says, we need these filed. So they do. They submit the applications. Then a problem comes up, and they realize there’s a regulatory structure underneath. Then another different problem, and they find there are unique utility requirements nested inside the larger framework. Layer by layer, the complexity starts to reveal itself; unfortunately, that’s usually right when they need to move fast for a customer. That’s the experience this course was built to change. What the Course Is Owning the Customer Interconnection Experience is designed for the people who sit between customers and utilities: interconnection specialists, customer service representatives, project coordinators, and anyone else whose job involves keeping DER projects moving through the approval and energization process. The course doesn’t focus on engineering determinations or queue positioning. Those belong to other teams and other processes. What it focuses on is what interconnection professionals can actually control: communication, coordination, expectation-setting, and follow-through. Those are the things that determine whether a customer has a smooth experience or a frustrating one, and whether a project closes efficiently or drags out. Instruction is built around operational reality rather than theory. Learners work through the customer interconnection journey from acquisition through construction and into ongoing service, with clear attention to which parties are accountable for each step, across company sizes, business models, and customer types. What’s Included Pre-assessments to evaluate how your current processes align with best practices In-depth flowcharts mapping the interconnection process at the general, specific, and company level (including which teams own which steps) Boilerplate email templates for navigating challenges with utilities A decision tree for evaluating formal dispute processes with regulators Audio content and podcast interviews designed to be consumed while driving, walking, or doing other work (because not every lesson needs a screen) What You’ll Learn By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to: Clearly explain utility interconnection pathways and timelines to customers Identify what aspects of the process you actually control and lead within that scope Support clean handoffs between sales, engineering, and customer service teams Track applications, manage milestones, and coordinate with utilities Navigate screening failures, delays, and disputes with professionalism Close out projects efficiently while keeping accountability and trust intact Before You Enroll: Start with the Free Prerequisite If you’re newer to interconnection, or want context for everything this course covers, start with the free prerequisite: How We Got Here: A (Riveting!)
