Meet John Siegenthaler – Instructor Spotlight

Brit Heller Brit Heller

Behind every transformative learning experience at HeatSpring is a dedicated instructor – someone who brings not just knowledge, but passion, real-world experience, and a commitment to helping others grow. Though our online courses connect with students across the globe, there’s often little opportunity for learners to get to know the actual people creating and delivering that content.

That’s why we have our Instructor Spotlight series – to introduce you to the individuals who make HeatSpring’s learning community so special.

Today, meet John Siegenthaler – a professional engineer with 48 years in the hydronic heating industry and one of HeatSpring’s most popular instructors.

John started his career as a system design engineer for solar thermal systems at Revere Solar & Architectural Products in Rome, NY, back when the industry was still finding its footing. Nearly five decades later, he’s still one of the most respected voices in hydronic design and education.

What’s a quote you think about often?

“One of the greatest things about hydronics technology is that there’s virtually no limit to the types of systems you can create. One of the worst things about hydronics technology is that there’s virtually no limit to the types of systems you can create.”

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?

Whatever you do, do it as unto God.

What was your first job in the industry?

System design engineer for solar thermal systems at Revere Solar & Architectural Products in Rome, NY

How many years have you been in the industry?

48 years.

What’s a fun fact about you that your students don’t know?

Sounds crazy, but I love drawing hydronic piping schematics. I find it both relaxing and fun. I liken it to other creative medias — painting, music, etc. With the right concepts and experience, systems can be crafted to the exact needs of a project.

What are your hobbies?

Road cycling, downhill skiing, flying an ultralight aircraft.

What’s a tradition or habit you’re proud of?

Driving my tractor to mow hay in summer, and plow snow in winter.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Medium rare steak, asparagus, really good bread, and raspberry pie.
