The course will use IGSHPA’s “Residential and Light Commercial Design and Installation Manual”, and is taught by the author, Ryan Carda P.E.
LoopLink RLC, an online geothermal design tool, will be used heavily in the class and the course comes with a 1-year license for the software. LoopLink RLC Certification is earned by successfully completing the final design problem and is valid for three years. Each week students will have a reading lesson, a homework assignment (usually a design that you have to do on your own), and discussion with the instructor and other students.

About instructor Ryan Carda, P.E. – President, Geo-Connections, Inc.
Ryan Carda, P.E. is a Mechanical Engineer at Geo Pro, Inc. and is a co-founder of Geo-Connections, Inc. (creators of LoopLink Geothermal design software). He is a co-author of “Design and Installation of Residential and Light Commercial GSHP Systems”, developed in cooperation with the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA). He has been involved in the ground source heat pump industry since 2006. His involvement in the industry has included training hundreds of students, as well as hands on experience designing, installing, commissioning and troubleshooting of all types of geothermal systems. Ryan graduated with his Master of Science degree in Engineering from South Dakota State University in 2006. Ryan enjoys instructing newcomers to the industry in hopes that they leave sharing his enthusiasm for geothermal technology. His main goal is to help promote and build confidence in ground source heat pumps through education in order to help it become a main-stream technology.
I had a pond put in on some property that I own. My wife and I plan on building our home there in the next couple years and a pond loop would be perfect for us. It’s 10-12 feet deep and 3/4 acre size. We have considered wind power but geothermal looks like the best option for us. I will be building our home myself and would like to do the pond loop myself. I am looking for training to be able to do that and to be able to market that skill after completion. Plenty of opportunity here to do just that in this area. Will this course provide me with the knowledge to do that ?
Mark,
The Geothermal Designer Boot Camp might be a bit too advanced as a starting point. If you don’t have any geothermal experience, I suggest the Entry Level Geothermal Professional course or the Geothermal Installer Certification courses. We cover design in both of those courses, and the instructors can help you lay out the design for your home.
That Geothermal Designer course is usually for people who have already been through the installer course, or have some experience with geothermal systems. With that said, if you are technically inclined and willing to do a lot of studying on your own, it’s possible that you’d do just fine.
Thanks for your interest in geothermal heat pumps, and in HeatSpring too.
