New Course Announcement: LEED Green Rater Training

With tens of thousands of LEED projects registered, USGBC reports that demand for qualified LEED Green Raters keeps growing every day. No LEED Residential project can get certified without one. That’s why we’re excited to announce a new course: LEED Green Rater Training, taught by the GreenHome Institute (GHI) and now available on HeatSpring.

What Is a LEED Green Rater?

LEED Residential projects require third-party, on-site verification and performance testing before they can be certified, and that’s where the LEED Green Rater comes in. USGBC defines Green Raters as individuals authorized by GBCI to perform these verification services on LEED Residential projects, based on their demonstrated experience and expertise in residential green building and verification. Now that residential and mixed-use projects of any size can pursue certification under the LEED Residential rating system, that verification role has only become more essential to getting a project across the finish line.

Introducing Our New Course – LEED Green Rater Training

Designed and taught by GreenHome Institute, this course prepares qualified participants to provide verification services on LEED Residential projects. It’s built for professionals who are ready to move from understanding the LEED for Homes rating system to actually verifying it in the field.

• Define the responsibilities of a LEED Green Rater in each phase of a project
• Manage and conduct verification activities
• Effectively use the LEED Residential resources
• Identify the location of key resources

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is built for professionals who are ready to take the next step toward becoming a LEED Green Rater, including:

• LEED APs (BD+C or Homes) looking to move into on-site verification work
• HERS raters, energy auditors, and building performance professionals expanding into LEED verification
• Green building consultants and project managers working on LEED Residential projects
• Anyone pursuing the LEED for Homes Green Rater credential

One thing to know before you enroll,, you don’t need to already hold a LEED AP credential to start the course, but you will need to earn one (LEED AP BD+C or LEED AP Homes) within six months of taking it, or you’ll be required to retake the course at an additional fee. GHI recommends becoming a LEED Green Associate, then a LEED AP, before starting this training.

Brett Little is the Education Manager at the GreenHome Institute, where he’s spent 15 years providing education, training, consultation, and third-party verification to help homes and residential projects achieve more sustainable outcomes. Brett holds a bachelor’s degree in Sustainable Business, is a LEED AP Homes and LEED Green Rater himself, and has provided consulting and verification services on thousands of residential green-certified projects.
