Meet Baker Makarem – Instructor Spotlight

Brit Heller Brit Heller

Behind every HeatSpring course is an expert instructor—a seasoned professional who brings not just knowledge, but passion, real-world experience, and a commitment to helping others grow. While thousands of students benefit from their expertise through our online courses, the remote nature of digital learning means many never get to know the remarkable humans behind the content.

That’s why we launched our Instructor Spotlight series. In these profiles, you’ll meet the folks who make HeatSpring’s learning community so special while helping build the future of our industry – one learner at a time.

Say hello to Baker Makarem!

Baker is a new instructor to HeatSpring, recently launching his Residential Grid-Tied Solar Design course

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?

Don’t be afraid to start over and take on new challenges.

My background was in maintenance for oil industry service equipment, so when solar energy caught my attention, I was hesitant to start over. It felt overwhelming to dive into a field with so much new information—and without a mentor to guide me. But once I gained momentum, I began attending training sessions, reading manuals, and watching videos.

Little did I know that before long, I’d be up on a two-story roof, installing my first solar system. Destiny couldn’t have chosen a flat roof for my first job, instead of a 7/12 pitch.

Looking back, I’m glad I pushed through the uncertainty. It taught me that growth often comes when you’re outside your comfort zone.

What’s a quote you think about often?

There is no specific quote, but I do repeat this often:

There is an intrinsic responsibility that comes with knowledge: to share it with others, just as it was once shared with us.

What was your first job in the industry?

My first job was at a startup solar installation company. It was just the owner and me at the beginning, so I had to rely heavily on self-learning to get up to speed. As I gained more experience and deepened my knowledge, I was able to take on more responsibilities, which helped the company grow alongside my own development.

How many years have you been in the industry?

8 years and counting

What are your hobbies?

I like to eat, although not sure if it is a hobby. Let me fix this: I like to enjoy different cuisines. I also enjoy mountain biking without the bruises.

What’s a fun fact about you that your students don’t know?

I play drums, well I try to.

Your favorite song at the moment?

Soda Stereo- Séptimo dia (the key is to find the time signature)

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I think it would be pizza, but I know my doctor would say otherwise.

Anything else you think would be fun to share?

I’m a big fan of sumo wrestling, I’m always looking forward to the next Grand Sumo Championship. It’s something a bit unexpected, but I love the tradition, strategy, and power behind it.

Also, here’s a fun story from early in my career: it took 3 of us 6 full days to install my very first solar system, with just a manual and a lot of trial and error. The second installation took 3 days, and from there, it just kept getting better. It’s one of those things you never forget because it showed me how much you can improve when you stick with it.
