What advice would you give your younger self?  

I’d encourage my younger self to push myself out of my comfort zone, try big things, and not be afraid of failing as long as you can learn something from the experience. 

Remaining curious and having a genuine desire to learn is a super power, and it sets you apart in all kinds of interesting ways. 

What’s a quote you think about often?

 “It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who spends himself in a worthy cause.” – Theodore Roosevelt

I have always loved this quote. I (probably like most folks) have days where I doubt my abilities or my skillsets and feel like an imposter in one way or another… 

But nine times out of ten the best thing is to show up, take the opportunity and get out of my comfort zone – that attitude has provided me countless opportunities and experiences that never would have been possible if I’d held back or listened to people who didn’t believe in me. 

It’s much easier to criticize than to do!

What was your first job in the industry?

Out of university, after spending about a year travelling around the US – teaching at a summer camp in Maine, working at a ski resort in Colorado, then a lodge in Alaska – I spent two years in energy efficiency-related work in Sydney, Australia, before returning to the US and falling into large-scale solar construction as a traveling field engineer in 2014. Quite frankly, I didn’t know that large-scale solar was a thing – and would have tried to get involved sooner if I’d known!

How many years have you been in the industry? 

Since late 2014 – just over ten years now! 

What are your hobbies?

I’m happiest when I’m spending time outdoors. I moved to Bend, Oregon in 2020 to be able to tap into my passion for hiking, climbing and kayaking. We recently bought a raft to utilize as a family, and have started to land some river permits which have been an exciting new adventure.

I dove deep into strength training over the past few years, and spent altogether too much time on a rowing machine in 2023/2024 trying to achieve a few goals (a 7-minute 2000m row and a full rowing marathon – both of which I managed to achieve!) 

My wife, Alyssa, and I are also in the process of opening a franchised fitness studio called Madabolic, and we’ll be opening in mid-2025. My 4-year old goldendoodle, Lyra,  requires a lot of my attention (two walks a day – she’s outrageously spoiled!), and we also have our first child (a baby girl) arriving in late January 2025, so I’m sure life is about to change pretty rapidly once she arrives!

What’s a fun fact about you that your students don’t know?

I spent approximately six months in early 2014 backpacking around India, Nepal and Cambodia – volunteering at a number of different NGOs, hiking a bunch, learning to ride a motorcycle, and taking it through Northern India for a two-week tour. I also grew an absolutely fantastic beard that I sadly had to lose once I returned to real life!
