How to Properly Fit a Fall Protection Harness

In the hierarchy of fall protection, PPE, sits near the bottom, not the top. Elimination – removing the fall hazard entirely – is always the first line of defense, followed by passive systems, travel restraint, and only then fall arrest. That ranking doesn’t make the harness optional, though. When the job calls for fall arrest, wearing one correctly is a requirement. Because it has no layer left behind it, it has to work exactly as intended. 

A properly rated harness won’t do its job if it isn’t fitted correctly. An ill-fitting harness can shift during a fall, fail to distribute arresting forces properly, or – in the worst case – allow a worker to slip out entirely. So yes, you do need to do a “fit check” every time, before you get on that roof.

That’s because fit isn’t a one and done thing. It’s a routine check you repeat before every single use, because body position, clothing layers, and even what’s in your pockets can all change how a harness sits on you from one day to the next.

Transcript: How to Properly Fit a Harness

Step 1: Empty your pockets. Before you even put the harness on, empty your pockets. Items left in your pockets will prevent the leg straps from sitting correctly.

Step 2: Hold the harness by the back D-ring. Holding the harness by the D-ring on the back helps give it shape and makes it much easier to see which straps go where – especially if the harness is bunched up.

Step 3: Put your arms through the armholes. Sling the harness on like a backpack. Once it’s draped on your body, it’s easier to tell which buckle goes where.

Step 4: Buckle in from top to bottom.

  • Chest strap: Snap it into place. On a clasp-style harness, the clasp passes through the hole and seats into place – listen for the snap to confirm it’s seated properly.
  • Waist strap: Same mechanism – the strap passes through the hole, comes back around, and the two sides cradle together. Pull back until you hear the snap.
  • Leg straps: Buckle each strap at the hip, through the hole, and pull back until you hear the snap. Repeat on the other side.

Once both leg straps are snapped, you’re fully buckled in.

Step 5: Check the fit with the hand test. Put your hand flat through a strap and make a fist, then try to pull it out.

  • If you can’t pull your fist back out – the fit is correct.
  • If you can’t fit your hand through the strap at all – it’s too tight and needs to be loosened.
  • If you can pull your fist back out easily – it’s too loose and needs to be tightened.

Step 6: Recheck before every use. Fit isn’t something to verify once. Check it every time, before every use – ideally every morning before getting on a roof. This matters even more seasonally: adding or removing layers for warmer or cooler weather changes how the harness sits on your body, so a fit that was correct last week may not be correct today.
