HeatSpring CORE: A Universal First-Year Curriculum for Construction Trades

Brian Hayden Brian Hayden

HeatSpring CORE is a safety-centered alternative to NCCER CORE. We’ve been thinking about this for a long time and it’s kind of a big deal. If your company uses or has considered NCCER curriculum in the past, give HeatSpring CORE a look.

A “Universal First-Year”

Finding qualified workers willing start at the bottom is downright impossible. So most companies hire a bunch of new folks, train them on the job, and expect a lot of turnover. Like baby sea turtles crossing the beach to the ocean; only the strong survive.

The cool thing about NCCER CORE is that everybody needs it, regardless of their future career path. So CORE gives everybody a common language and limits the cost of training folks who may or may not stick around.

HeatSpring CORE does the same. It’s a 144-hour construction training program that prepares entry-level workers for careers in electrical, HVACR, heavy equipment operations, carpentry, and pipefitting.

What Makes HeatSpring CORE Unique

Safety Focus

Safety is a natural starting point for any new employee training. It’s not always the most exciting content, but it’s obviously critical to keep newbies safe on the job. Safety content tends to be heavily regulated, commoditized, and relatively cheap. And there are really well-known certifications that people can earn. For a relatively low investment for you, your employees can earn certifications that are recognized and valuable for them:

  • OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction certification (student choice)
  • NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Training – critical for clean energy projects
  • Forklift and Telehandler certifications – immediate operational value
  • Specialized training in fall protection, rigging, excavation, and trenching safety

The bottom line: Your new hires quickly earn multiple safety certifications, learn how to stay safe on the job, and keep your overhead low.

Clean Energy Exposure

Traditional construction training programs like NCCER CORE were not designed with clean energy projects in mind. HeatSpring CORE teaches basic skills that apply to any trade, but through the lens of clean energy.

The result: Employees start to understand both traditional construction and emerging clean energy technologies.

Reduced Training Costs

HeatSpring Teams get 20-40% off HeatSpring CORE. Multiple safety certifications and equipment training that typically cost $2,000-3,000 per employee are included in the program, keeping it affordable for you. More specialized training can come later when the employee has proven themselves and the career path is coming into focus.

Lower Insurance Premiums

Many insurance providers offer reduced rates for companies employing workers with comprehensive safety certifications like those included in HeatSpring CORE.
