Roy Collver’s “Condensing Boilers in Hydronic Systems” is the most underutilized course we offer (OK, tied with Robert Bean’s HVAC Engineering). Roy has built this exhaustive educational experience that only a handful of folks have benefited from so far. We hope to change that in 2015 by giving away small pieces of his course so people can appreciate his greatness, and learn all the ins and outs of mod-con boilers. Here’s the first of these giveaways:

If Roy’s name sounds familiar, it might be because he was just awarded the CIPH, Canadian Hydronics Council Award of Merit. The Council selects one person per year by vote. This is like winning an Oscar, but for hydronic heating. Always the careful practitioner, here are Roy’s comments about the calculator:
This method is for estimation of % fuel savings when comparing conventional gas-fired boilers to condensing gas-fired boilers in retrofit situations. It’s primary purpose is to point out various factors to be considered. Experience and knowledge on the user’s part as well as training in its use is essential to obtain accurate results. Estimates should be conservative. Seldom will you see numbers at the highest end of these ranges. It is better to under-promise and over-deliver. The Author will not be held liable for any misrepresentation or misuse of this method.
If heating systems are part of your professional life, I strongly encourage you to get to know Roy Collver and soak up the lessons he has learned over the past 25 years. He’s a renaissance man and all-around professional.
