Free “Data Center Cost Calculator” from Stanford’s Jonathan Koomey

Brian Hayden Brian Hayden

Jonathan Koomey created a simple Excel model for determining true total cost of ownership for data centers that you can customize and use for your company projects. Dr. Koomey was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal article titled, “Zombie Servers: They’re Here and Doing Nothing but Burning Energy”, and is the co-author of the report on comatose servers conducted with TSO Logic and Anthesis Group.

Things You Should Know about Jonathan Koomey

Koomey’s no lightweight. As I’ve gotten to know Jon through our work on his course, I’ve been impressed by his deep connections and the respect he has within the datacenter industry. When we asked if he knew the executives at any of the big firms, he rattled this list off the top of his head:

  • TSO Logic
  • eBay
  • Google
  • Facebook
  • Microsoft
  • Yahoo
  • Akamai
  • Rackspace
  • Future Facilities
  • Vapor IO
  • AMD
  • Intel
  • Vantage Data Centers
  • Cloud Velocity
  • Baidu
  • Twitter
  • Anthesis

Not a bad list. The more I learn about Jon’s message, the more obvious it is that he’s on the right side of history. Even a casual observer like me understands that 10 million comatose servers requiring four gigawatts of generating capacity, pretty much continuously, represents an opportunity for savings and efficiency gains. Students in Jon’s class talk about his approach as a ‘game changer’, and “without doubt, the way things need to go.”

I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with Jon and to play a small role in modernizing the approach to enterprise data centers.
