Celebrating Top Energy Efficiency Companies: Greenlink Energy Solutions Brit Heller According to the Department of Energy, buildings account for approximately 40% of all US energy consumption, yet many property owners struggle to navigate the complex landscape of energy efficiency improvements. Greenlink Energy Solutions is working to change that by providing comprehensive, science-based solutions to help customers achieve comfort, health, and energy efficiency in their buildings. We sat down with Austin Carr, President and Founder of Greenlink, to learn more about what keeps their company at the forefront of the industry. Founded in 2011 after Austin left the Army, Greenlink Energy Solutions emerged from his experience working in weatherization assistance programs. During this time, he noticed a critical gap in the Illinois market – homeowners were trying to piece together energy efficiency improvements themselves, calling a bunch of contractors focusing on different aspects of the home without understanding how these systems work together. “People were left to try to piece it all together themselves,” Austin explains. “They’re calling the window guy, the furnace guy, the insulation guy, and they’re trying to GC their energy efficiency improvements, not really knowing where to go.” What sets Greenlink apart is their diagnostic-first approach rooted in building science. Rather than pushing single solutions, like window replacements, they conduct comprehensive testing using tools like manometers and blower doors to understand exactly how a building is performing. This scientific methodology allows them to identify the true sources of comfort and efficiency issues. The company has grown significantly since its founding, now employing over 70 people across three main service verticals: envelope, mechanical, and renewable energy. In 2024, they expect to reach approximately $15 million in revenue – huge growth from $350,000 in energy efficiency work back in 2016. But with rapid growth comes workforce development challenges. “Finding somebody through an Indeed ad that’s going to come on as a full-blown building scientist – that just doesn’t happen,” says Austin. To address this, Greenlink focuses on building talent from within. The company places emphasis on professional certifications, encouraging team members to pursue Building Performance Institute (BPI) and North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) credentials right from the start. This investment in education and professional development pays off in the form of skilled, long-term employees who truly understand the foundational principles behind their work. Greenlink is also in the early days of exploring the possibility of an apprenticeship program. Austin envisions creating what he calls “Greenlink University,” a formalized training infrastructure to develop both technicians and energy auditors, not just for Greenlink, but to support workforce development needs regionally. When asked about team success stories, Austin noted there are many to choose from, but enthusiastically highlighted Olivia, their Chief of Staff. While pursuing her master’s degree, she connected with Greenlink through a workforce development program. Though she started in an administrative role, Olivia quickly proved herself indispensable. Now, she orchestrates the company’s day-to-day operations and has developed extensive building science expertise along the way. The installation teams have their own inspiring success stories, including Dave Sorensen, who now serves as one of Greenlink’s Solar Project Managers. Dave joined the team three years ago, bringing 15 years of valuable construction and electrical experience. Though already skilled in his trade, Dave’s passion for renewable energy drove him to continuously expand his expertise. He has since completed numerous manufacturer trainings to install Generac batteries and generators, as well as PV systems from SolarEdge, Enphase, and GoodWe. His commitment to learning embodies Greenlink’s culture of continuous professional development. As a project manager, Dave now plays a crucial role in maintaining Greenlink’s high standards, overseeing solar installer training and ensuring that each member of the team is equipped to deliver their best work. His unwavering support not only uplifts the team, but also inspires everyone to bring their best selves to every project. With their unique combination of scientific rigor, comprehensive solutions, and commitment to workforce development, Greenlink Energy Solutions shows us how companies can succeed while advancing the critical work of improving building performance and reducing our carbon footprint.
