Your Guide to Making the Most of HeatSpring Assessments

Brit Heller Brit Heller

You’ve enrolled in a HeatSpring course to build your expertise – in solar, building science, energy storage systems, or another area. It’s important to remember that the video lessons are just a part of your learning journey. HeatSpring courses now include three types of assessments designed to help you learn, retain information, and build confidence as you work toward certification or career advancement.

Understanding how each assessment works can help you harness them as powerful learning tools. Here’s what you need to know about Knowledge Checks, Quizzes, and Practice Exams.

Knowledge Checks – Your Immediate Comprehension Checkpoint

Right after you finish a video, you’ll often encounter a Knowledge Check – a quick two or three questions that take under two minutes to complete. Think of these as a friendly tap on the shoulder asking, “Did that make sense?”

What makes Knowledge Checks valuable is that they give you instant feedback while the material is still fresh in your mind. If you breeze through them, great! You’re ready to move forward. If you struggle, that’s valuable information telling you to rewatch that video before continuing.

Knowledge Checks are completely optional and don’t affect your course completion or certificate eligibility. You can skip them if you want, but they’re worth your time. They help you catch gaps in understanding early, when they’re easiest to fix. Most HeatSpring courses include one Knowledge Check for every 15 minutes of video content, so they’re spaced throughout your learning journey.

Quizzes – Connecting the Dots Across a Module

At the end of most modules, you’ll encounter a quiz that pulls together concepts from multiple videos. While Knowledge Checks focus on a single lesson, quizzes test whether you’ve connected ideas across an entire section of the course.

Quizzes typically include 5-20 questions and take 10-15 minutes to complete. Some courses require you to pass a quiz before moving forward, while others make them optional. Either way, you can retake quizzes as many times as you need. There’s no penalty for trying again.

Here’s the key difference in how feedback works: if a quiz is optional, you’ll see your score and detailed feedback immediately after completing it. But if the quiz is required for course completion, feedback is withheld until you achieve a passing score. This encourages you to review the material and try again rather than just memorizing the correct answers.

Quizzes are your check-in to make sure you’ve genuinely absorbed a module’s content before moving on. If you find yourself struggling, it’s a signal to revisit the videos and strengthen your understanding before continuing.

Practice Exams – Your Certification Dress Rehearsal

If you’re preparing for an external certification like the NABCEP PV Installation Professional or BPI Building Analyst Professional, the Practice Exam is your most valuable study tool. These comprehensive assessments pull questions from across the entire course, typically featuring 20 or more questions and requiring 30 minutes or more to complete.

The beauty of Practice Exams is that they mirror the real certification testing experience without any stakes attached. They don’t count toward your course completion or certificate eligibility. They’re purely for your benefit. You can take them as many times as you want, making them perfect for identifying weak areas and tracking your progress as you study.

Practice Exams come in two formats:

  • Practice Mode gives you a low-stakes environment to work through questions at your own pace. There’s no time pressure, so you can think through each question carefully and learn as you go. This mode is ideal when you’re early in your study process and want to identify knowledge gaps without the stress of a ticking clock.
  • Exam Mode simulates the actual certification test experience. You’ll need to complete the exam within a set time limit and achieve a passing score – both configured by your instructor to mirror the real exam you’re preparing for. This mode helps you build test-taking stamina, practice time management, and get comfortable with a standardized test environment.

We recommend you use these strategically. Start with Practice Mode early in your studies to identify weak areas without time pressure. As your test date approaches, switch to Exam Mode to build confidence under realistic testing conditions and ensure you’re ready for the real thing.

Building Your Personal Study Strategy

The assessments in HeatSpring courses aren’t designed to trip you up or make you fail. They’re built into your learning journey to help new concepts stick. Knowledge Checks reinforce learning while it’s fresh. Quizzes ensure you’ve connected concepts before moving forward. Practice Exams build confidence and identify areas needing review before high-stakes certification tests.

These tools are designed to help you succeed, whether your goal is certification, professional development, or simply mastering new skills. See you in class!
